What are Passion Twists?

Passion twists are a type of two-strand twists that are created by using the Freetress Water Wave braiding hair extension to give off a natural boho (unconventional and artsy) look. Due to their appearance, some people mistake them for faux locs. However, they look more like a blend of Senegalese twists and Goddess locs.

Passion twists made their debut into the world of protective styling in 2018 when Miami-based hairstylist Kailyn Rogers alias The Boho Babe, posted a video of them on Instagram. It gained popularity fast, has over 100,000 searches (#passiontwists) on Instagram and since then, has become one of the most sought-after protective styles to do by naturals and non-naturals alike.

Frequently Asked Questions About Passion Twists

Are passion twists good for my natural hair?

Absolutely! Passion twists are safe for your natural hair and they help to promote hair growth since you do not have to manipulate your hair every other day. However, if you are battling hair damage, it is advisable that you wait until your hair is back to a healthy state before you do this hairstyle.

How long do passion twists last?

Passion twists can last between 8 – 10 weeks, depending on how well you maintain them. They should not be left longer than this period as they may start to fall out by themselves which can cause damage to your natural hair.

How much will it cost to make passion twists?

To be honest, passion twists are expensive to make. Their estimated cost is between 200 - 250 dollars. However, if you do not have that much to spend on a protective style, you can DIY. Later on in this article, I will be providing you with a step-by-step tutorial on how to make passion twists at home.

Can I swim in passion twists?

Yes, you can. The Freetress Water Wave braiding hair extension is water-friendly. All you need to do is wash your scalp and the roots of your natural hair with a conditioner afterward, dry, and moisturize.

Can I wash my passion twists?

Yes, you can. However, it is not advisable that you wash it every other week because your twists will easily wear out and your natural hair will experience frizz. So, you should keep washing to once or twice a month.

How do I take out my passion twists?

This depends on the installation method. If you have rubber bands in them, you may enlist the help of another person to cut out these before you unravel the twists. Also, make sure your twists and fingers are moisturized with an oil-based product as this will allow your twists to unravel easily and slide off without causing damage to your natural hair.

How Do You Care for Passion Twists?

1. Washing

products for washing hair

You will need your shampoo and conditioner to do this. While you can wash your passion twists the same way you wash your natural hair, they may end up looking messy, old, and some twists may unravel. So, I advise that you dip a cotton ball in the shampoo and use it to gently wipe your scalp. After that, dip another cotton ball in water to cleanse, and repeat the cotton ball process when you want to condition. Does this method guarantee completely clean hair? No. You cannot completely clean your hair until you have taken your braids out. However, with this method, you can reduce the amount of dust, dirt, and product build-up that piles up in your hair.

2. Moisturize

coconut oil

Moisturizing will help prevent dryness and itching that usually come when you have a protective style installed. If your scalp starts to itch, you can massage an anti-itch scalp oil to help you get rid of it. Also, when you have passion twists installed, it is advisable to limit your moisturizing to lightweight hair oils and oiling twice or three times a week. This way, you prevent product build-ups on your scalp.

3. Use a Silk Scarf/Bonnet

satin bonnet

Before you go to sleep, wrap a silk scarf or wear a satin bonnet on your hair. This will prevent your twists from losing moisture and shape as you turn and toss in your sleep.

4. Retouch

If the roots of your natural hair start to come out of place, you can touch them up by applying hair gel, wax, or curling butter to make them appear neat again.

5. Minimize Styling

Manipulating your passion twists into different hairstyles (buns, updos, ponytails, pigtails, etc) every other week will not only cause it to wear out quickly but may also cause your natural hair to experience breakage. So, limit your styling to two times a week.
